MIAMI (CBSMiami) – From this point forward, the days will begin to get longer.

Sunday, December 21 marks the first day of the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

Winter officially begins at 6:03 p.m.

It's also the time when the sun rises and sets at its most southerly location along the horizon.

The days will begin to get longer until the summer solstice on June 21, 2015 which will be the longest day of the year.
