FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Drivers on the Palmetto Expressway were left a little frustrated Wednesday morning because of a crash that backed up traffic for miles.

The Florida Department of Transportation' regional traffic management center monitors all major accidents like the one this morning.

CBS4's Bianca Peters took a look at how they do it and what drivers should be looking out for.

"Today, I would guess around 3:30, 4 o'clock this afternoon, traffic should probably really start picking up in Broward and Palm Beach counties and in the major metropolitan areas," said Daniel Smith, IT Operations officer.

They warn drivers to pay a bit more attentions as other drivers are also rushing around for Thanksgiving travel and preps.

"We don't expect anything highly unusual this year, but we do have extra staff standing by to make sure that we can respond to incidents properly."
