Voters Pass Property Tax Exemptions For Disabled First Responders & Senior Citizens

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Voters have passed two amendments regarding property tax exemptions for first responders and senior citizens.

Amendment 3 was about property tax exemptions for disabled first responders.

First responders totally disabled on the job will no longer have to pay property taxes.

Prior to this amendment, the exemption was only applicable to spouses of first responders or military personnel killed in the line of duty.

Amendment 5 was about property tax exemptions for senior citizens.

They will now be able to lock in their property taxes for life at a maximum value of $250,000.

To qualify you must:

  • Be 65 or older
  • Have lived in your home for at least 25 years
  • Have a home currently worth less than $250,000
  • Must make less than $20,000 a year
  • The impact to the state ranges from $1 million to $5 million in lost tax revenue
