HIALEAH (CBSMiami) -- Friends and family gathered Saturday in memory of a man killed on the Palmetto Expressway after stopping to help a friend who ran out of gas.

A viewing was held for Tony Thomason, whose friends knew him better as "Taco," at a funeral home at 250 East 4th Avenue in Hialeah.

Family members demanded justice for the driver who struck Tony and his friend Oscar Rodriguez on the morning of Christmas Eve and took off.

"It changed our entire family," said Grace Angulo, the victim's cousin. "Christmas wasn't Christmas, really. It just wasn't."

The incident happened after Rodriguez had run out of gas and called Tony for help. As they were standing by their cars on the side of the road, they were hit.

Tony was killed. Oscar was hospitalized in critical condition.

Police are hoping someone has information on the hit and run driver that can lead to an arrest.
