Vets Warn Sweetener Can Be Deadly For Dogs

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - With the holidays just around the corner, dog owners are being warned about a common sweetener found in a variety of food products which could be deadly to their four-legged friends.

Xylitol is a no calorie sweetener extracted from plants.

It's found as a sugar substitute in everything from baked goods and peanut butter to sugar free gum. It's safe for humans but if a dog eats even a half a gram of it, it can become sick.

Ingestion of larger amounts can cause severe low blood sugar and even liver failure in dogs.
