Venezuelans Hold 5K In Miami To Support Protesters

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — In support of student protesters abroad, Venezuelans in Miami are holding a 5K run on Saturday.

Saturday marks two months since the start of demonstrations that rocked Venezuela. At least 40 people died in the unrest.

Demonstrators are upset about rising inflation, crime, food shortages and a heavy-handed government that shut off spaces for dissent.

The International Democratic Network and the Venezuelan Student Alliance at Miami Dade College are organizing the Saturday run in Miami. They say all funds raised will go toward humanitarian assistance for students participating in the protests. The run will take place at the college's Kendall campus.

Miami is home to the largest concentration of Venezuelans in the United States. Most are strongly against the government of President Nicolas Maduro.
