Underwater Streaming Video Helps Educate About Ocean Conservation
KEY WEST (CBSMiami/Florida Keys News Bureau)– It was World Oceans Day and to celebrate, divers in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary displayed underwater messages in front of a live-streaming video camera.
The camera was positioned on the ocean floor and the pictures were broadcast over the World Wide Web.
Sunday's Ocean in Motion celebration at Sand Key Reef was the brainchild of Keys videographers Joe and Ozlem Berg, designed to showcase and share small actions people can take to help conserve ocean resources around the globe.
Among those bringing the ocean floor to the world were divers and snorkelers.
They chose personal "ocean promises" and communicate them on slates or in other ways in front of their cameras, set up 20 feet underwater about 8.5 miles off Key West at Sand Key reef.
Participants were encouraged to wear costumes and be creative while making their pledges. Among the most intriguing was a diver costumed as the children's book character "The Cat in the Hat," whose ocean promise was delivered on slates in rhyme reminiscent of the classic Dr. Seuss book.
