Uber May Have A Future In Broward County

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- There may be a future for the ride-sharing service Uber in Broward County.

And it would come in the form of a a new law, but first, it must be approved.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the public will get to know more about it on Tuesday at a meeting where commissioners will debate on a proposed ordinance and vote on whether to send it to a final hearing on Sept. 17th.

The law would remove the requirement for the county to check on Uber's drivers and vehicles. That would be up to the company.

Uber would also be allowed to get a six-month permit to operate in the county even if Broward leaders believe the company lacks the type of car insurance required by the state.

In that period, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles could determine that the company's insurance is sufficient.

Taxi companies in Broward are against the new ordinance saying Tuesday's vote is unconstitutional.
