WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) – President Trump has made his closing argument for the Republican tax cut plan.

The remarks came on the day Republicans in the House and Senate cut a deal on a final bill to overhaul the nation's tax code.

Trump delivered his final pitch for the Republican tax cut plan, surrounded by families he says will benefit from it.

"We want to give you, the American people a giant tax cut for Christmas," Trump said.

The President's remarks came shortly after House and Senate Republicans reached an agreement in principle on a final tax package.

It slashes the top tax rate for the wealthiest individuals to 37 percent and reduces the corporate tax rate to 21 percent.

Trump says businesses and Americans would also see cuts early next year.

"The IRS has just confirmed that Americans will see lower taxes and bigger paychecks beginning in February," he said.

Trump wants Congress to send him a bill before Christmas, securing his first major legislative victory.

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch and Texas Representative Kevin Brady met with President Trump at the White House Wednesday as they worked with other lawmakers to hammer out the final details.

"This is our once in a generation opportunity to deliver historic tax reform that we and the American people can all be proud of," Brady said.

But Democrats remain opposed to the deal:

"This legislation, which will have a major impact on our economy, has not had one public hearing," said Sen. Bernie Sanders.

They're calling on Republicans to delay their vote until next year.

But the House and Senate appear poised to vote on the GOP tax plan by the end of next week.

Democrats are also calling on Republicans to wait to vote until Democrat Doug Jones, the winner of the Alabama race, is seated.
