Hurricane Gonzalo Continues To Strengthen

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Hurricane Gonzalo is continuing to gain strength and is expected to pass northeast of the Virgin Islands overnight.

At 11 p.m., the center of the storm was located about 40 miles north-northwest of Anguilla and 105 miles east of St. Thomas.

The storm's maximum strength winds were 85 mph as it moved to the northwest at 12 mph.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin and Anguilla.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for St. Thomas and St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A Tropical Storm Warning is issued for St. Maarten, St. Barthelemy, Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Gonzalo is forecast to continue moving northwest through early Wednesday.  A turn toward the north-northwest is expected by late Wednesday.

On the forecast track, the center of Gonzalo pass just northeast of the Virgin Islands overnight Monday and move into the open Atlantic north of Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

Gonzalo is expected to produce up to eight inches of rain across the Leeward Islands and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. Some areas could see up to a foot of rain.

In Puerto Rico, Gonzalo is expected to produce three to five inches of rain with some areas possibly seeing up to eight inches.
