KISSIMMEE (CBSMiami/AP) — A 12-year-old was airlifted to the hospital after he was hit by a car as he was crossing a road to get onto a school bus, authorities said.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the crash happened around 6:40 a.m. Thursday near Kissimmee.

Troopers say Caleb Burgos was airlifted to an Orlando hospital in critical condition. Witnesses say the school bus was coming to a stop with its amber lights on, but the stop sign had not yet been deployed when a Nissan struck the boy.

An investigation continues. No charges were immediately filed.
