Tis The Season For Christmas Gift Returns, Bargain Hunting

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - While most shoppers on Christmas Eve are focused on getting last minute gifts for other people, many shoppers who come out after Christmas are focused on an end-of-the-year treat.

"All about the deals. Fifty percent off at certain places," said Josh Bartelstein at Aventura Mall.

Merlino and Beatrice Cinquini are visiting Miami from Italy.

"I thought maybe not too busy today," said Beatrice, when asked why she prefers shopping after Christmas.

That is exactly what retailers hope shoppers will do: buy new items instead of just returning or exchanging gifts.

The National Retail Federation estimates that 50% of consumers will shop in stores after Christmas, more than the 45% of those who go online.

Shoppers at Dolphin Mall say it's a way to get out of the house and spend more time with family.

The National Retail Federation also estimates that more than a quarter of shoppers will use gift cards that they received on Christmas.

Cinquini said her son Andreas received a $100 gift card to the Lego Store from Santa Clause.

Jethro Alfonceo gifted his sons cash, so they could select what they want.

"It happened to me when I was a kid. [My parents] always give me something I don't want," explained Alfonceo. "My kids want to get gaming stuff."
