Two of the victims were flown to Jackson South Medical Center following the incident, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in an emailed statement. Information about their conditions was pending.

A third person was evaluated at the scene but did not need to be hospitalized, officials said.

Crews from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to the scene and transported the victims to land following the boat crash.

The captain of a boat that was in the area at the time of the crash said he collected some of the debris following the accident.

"As we pulled up on the edge of the channel, we could smell fuel," Chris Adams said. "I assumed that meant a boat went down."

CBS News Miami reporter Morgan Rynor contributed to this report.
