MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) - A short police pursuit came to an end at a Miramar canal when a suspected carjacker almost ended up in the water with the entire car.

The pursuit ended at Palm Avenue and Miramar Parkway where the stolen car crashed through a guard rail and landed partially in the canal.

Office workers nearby heard the commotion.

"We just heard a lot of cars, you know, cops, we just heard a boom and everybody just came out of the office to see what's going on," said Mark Alcivar who works nearby.

When he and his co-workers got outside, they made it just in time to see officers grab for their guns.

"All we saw was just cops pointing guns at the person who was in the vehicle," he described.

There were actually three people inside, two guys and a woman.  They were all taken into custody.

The entire incident started Sunday in West Park.

Investigators say a Nissan Altima was taken when an elderly woman was carjacked at gunpoint.

Tuesday afternoon around 1:00 p.m., a Miramar Police officer spotted the car at a Hess gas station at Douglas Road and Miramar Parkway, just a few blocks from where it ended up in the water.

"(He) noticed a white Nissan Altima, ran the tag of that vehicle and that vehicle came back to the armed carjacking that took place the day before yesterday," said Miramar Police Spokeswoman Tania Rues.

When police went to pull the car over, there was a short chase before it went off the road and over the embankment, stopping just before fully going into the water.
