MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- South Florida is cycling for a cause Saturday as thousands of riders cross three counties for a charity race and run totaling 100 miles.

The Dolphins Cancer Challenge got started Friday with a kickoff party at SunLife Stadium and raises money to continue research at the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

On Saturday, riders took to the streets going through Miami, Miami Beach and into Broward County, Ft. Lauderdale and eventually ending back at SunLife Stadium for an afternoon concert.

"6,000 plus people descending upon it, but all with a singular purpose in mind, which is to raise money for cancer research," said the event's CEO Mike Mandich, whose father and former Miami Dolphin great, Jim Mandich, passed away in 2011 from cancer. "It's very special to a lot of people, like myself and thousands of others, that'll participate this weekend.

Along with the bike ride, the event also included a concert and 5K run.

More than $11.5 million has been donated since the event's inaugural run in 2010.
