MIAMI (CBSMiami) - More than a thousand needy families got Thanksgiving turkeys Tuesday thanks to the Miami-Dade League of Cities and the City of Sweetwater.

Desiree Vannucci came to the League of Cities Sweetwater turkey giveaway to help out her father-in-law.

"He's actually not feeling good, so he couldn't come himself. So it's a family effort," she told CBS4's Natalia Zea.

The giveaway is a help to Jose Sierra too who says he gladly shares it with his neighbors.

"I make the turkey and I try to share with everybody who I know, so they can come," said Sierra.

Sierra said this turkey giveaway tradition goes back many years and he looks forward to taking part in it every year.

"They do it yearly. It's a good thing they keep doing it. It promotes, I guess, it's like a meeting, reunion with all the people that have been here for so many years. So it's like a family reunion every year," said Sierra.

Miami-Dade County League of Cities Executive Director Richard Cooper said he's thrilled to take part.

"When you see the faces of those that would go without, it just makes a world of difference and it makes us very proud and very happy to be able to help."

Some folks had to wait hours to get their free Thanksgiving meal but all were thrilled this tradition continues.

In addition to the Sweetwater event, the League of Cities held turkey giveaways in South Miami, Miami Beach, and Miami Gardens.
