MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Dozens of local teens put their driving skills to the test on Saturday in an effort to help stay safe on the road.

The teens drove specially-equipped vehicles on road courses under the supervision of instructors at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens. The course was meant to improve their driving skills.

The event, Driving Skills For Life, was held by Ford and was free to the public.

The program was developed in 2003 in conjunction with the Governors Highway Safety Association and a panel of safety experts to address the leading causes of death among teenagers in the United States - vehicle crashes.

Another event is scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
