LITTLE HAVANA (CBSMiami) -- A 16-year-old has been hospitalized following a shooting at a supermarket in Little Havana.

It happened Saturday morning inside the El Palacio Supermarket at 500 S.W. 10th Avenue.

Police said the victim and a friend were walking to the corner store when someone drove by and opened fire. The victim, a student at Booker T. Washington, was struck in the thigh. Witnesses said they heard between 8 to 10 shots.

"I'm really worried about him. I wanted to go in the ambulance and everything but they didn't let me," said Kelly Brito, a friend of the victim.

Brito was outside her home nearby, waiting for her boyfriend and her best friend, when they walked to the store. Suddenly, she heard shots. It was her best friend who was shot.

"I was waiting for him and all of a sudden, I hear the shots. And I started panicking and I called the police. I was really worried and I didn't know where he was."

Miami Police and CSI quickly arrived to investigate. It's still unclear who or why someone opened fire.

Kelly says she's tired of all the gun violence.

"This is ridiculous. Every day around this area," she said. "Sometimes you hear shots from somewhere and you don't even know if it's fireworks because it's so much."

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

It's unclear if he was targeted.
