'Take A Stand' : Carvalho Urges Community To Speak Up After Teen Shot

MIAMI (CBSMiami) --Police are investigating a shooting that left a 16-year-old wounded in Miami.
It happened late Tuesday night near the 800 block of NW 58th Street.
Miami Police said a red vehicles pulled up beside the teen as he was riding his bike. Moments later a person got out and began shooting at the teen. The shooter got back into the car and got away.
Shot spotter detected nine gun shots shortly before police were sent to the scene.
The teen was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition. His family gathered at the hospital and said the teen had to have surgery overnight. They also say police are asking them to keep the teen's identity quiet while investigators work this case.
Miami Dade Public Schools said the teen isn't one of their students, but overnight Superintendent Alberto Carvalho took to social media to comment on the shooting and urged the community to speak up.

The motive of the shooting is unknown at this time. Police said it remains unclear if the teen was the intended target.
Investigators are trying to find out if there were more people in the vehicle where the gunman came out of.
The teen's family didn't want to talk on camera but did ask for help in finding the person that did the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stopper at (305) 471-TIPS.
