DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) -- A masked gunman was shot and killed by a convenience store clerk during a robbery attempt at the Deerfield Beach store Friday, officials said.

It happened at the Snappy Convenience Store at 115 S.E. 10th Street.

While speaking to a customer, the store's cashier, Hamam Alfala, said the masked man approached from behind the customer, put a gun to his face and pulled the trigger.

But Alfala said he was able to avoid the gunfire and grab his own gun.

"He said, 'Gimme the money!' He shoot," said Alfala. "I take the gun, I shoot. We shoot together. He stop. I take another gun, I shoot him and he dies."

It's the second armed robbery the store has seen since 2010.

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating.
