MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Two roommates were sent to the hospital after they were stabbed while trying to stop someone from breaking into a car.

Just after the witching hour Halloween morning, a foreboding character, his hand covering his face to obscure it from security cameras, roamed NW 24th Avenue near Flagler Street in Little Havana.

A neighbor's security camera captured multiple angles of the man wandering the street checking for unlocked cars.

At one point he becomes something of a ghostly figure, pulling a whitish hoodie over his head.

The camera watches him walking down a drive at a house across the street. Minutes later, roommates, who live there, pull into the driveway. Seconds after that, there is a bloodbath – a macabre mess after the marauder was confronted by the arriving residents.

"They tried to catch him, hold him, restrain him," said housemate Oscar Alas.  "But he had a blade and they were stabbed."

The driveway and front-entry area to the home was awash in blood.

While one victim was treated and released, the second was horribly wounded and was in intensive care after surgery at Ryder Trauma Center.

A long-time neighbor arrived home just moments before his street was filled with police cars and rescue units.

The video tape shows that one of his cars was among those the bandit attempted to enter.

"It was scary," said the neighbor, who asked his name not be used. "It could've happened to me. I could've come in at the same time he was opening our car, just like happened to my neighbors across the street."

A few blocks from the bloody attack, police apprehended a "person of interest."

The young man, who appeared to be a teenager, was sporting the same bushy, black hairstyle, knee-length baggy type shorts, white tennis shoes and dark socks as the person captured on the security tape.

He had blood spatter on his shirt shorts and shoes. Police confiscated his clothes on the scene.

He was also treated for a cut of some sort that he had on one leg.

As of late Monday afternoon no arrest had been made.

Police have not said whether the "person of interest" is still in custody.

At the scene where he was apprehended, officers found a motor scooter, with a woman's purse on it.  One investigator said it's believed the purse was stolen from a car.

Miami police have not released the names of the two stabbing victims.

The neighbor across the street said the two were salt of the earth construction workers.

"They are hard-working men. They leave early in the morning, they come home late in the afternoon. I'm sorry that it happened to them. It could happen to any of us," the neighbor said.

He said that while the neighborhood has seen its share of property crime, he has never seen violent crime on his street, until this Halloween morning.
