MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- What was supposed to be a surprise Kanye West concert in Manhattan turned into chaos after thousands showed up at the venue only to learn that the concert was a no go.

Thousands of people crowded Third Avenue Monday morning - all converging on Webster Hall waitin and even sprinting at times - for a chance to see Kanye West.

"I personally saw people trample on windshields of cars. It was surreal, was something that should've never happened. And it just spiraled out of control," said one attendee.

The hip hop superstar was scheduled to perform at a rained-out Governors Ball on Sunday. But somehow, through word of mouth, it was rumored that he would be performing a pop up concert at Webster Hall - a venue that holds 1,500 people at capacity.

Thousands of people showed up, spilling out onto Third Avenue. When a message by Webster Hall was tweeted that there's no concert, that's when witnesses say the crowd of thousands - flowing out into the street - got out of control.

"There were a lot of people on cars…a girl who had a compound fracture, her ankle was coming out of her leg right here on the south side of the street," said a witness.

In a Snap Chat video, you can see Kanye West hanging out of a car to greet those waiting for him.

"Finally Kanye came in was hanging outside the car and everybody was going crazy and all the bands were slapping his hands," said another witness.

Police cited one person for disorderly conduct.  A lot of it started on social media when that pop up concert was rumored.

Reality star Kim Kardashian, Kanye's wife, sent out an apology on Snap Chat saying they tried but they could not because the police just would not let it happen.
