Superintendent Carvalho To Receive Presidential Recognition

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Another big pat on the proverbial back for Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

On Thursday, he will be honored by President Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan at a White House ceremony during the National Teacher of the Year announcement.

The state teachers of the year and national principals of the year will also be honored.

Carvalho is a nationally recognized expert on school reform and finance.

He successfully transformed his district's business operations and financial systems with the implementation of a streamlined Strategic Framework, aligning resources to classroom priorities resulting in dramatic increases in reserves, bond ratings and student achievement.

Last Sunday, April 27th, Carvalho received an honorary degree in public service from Florida International University during their spring commencement ceremonies.

"Superintendent Carvalho's leadership, vision, determination and hard work are at the heart of the transformation we have seen in our public schools," said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg.

In February, Carvalho was named the 2014 AASA National Superintendent of the Year during the organization's National Conference on Education.
