MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A Superbowl champion is giving back this holiday with the gift of turkeys.

Monday morning a line stretched down the block from Little Haiti Cultural Arts Center as hundreds of people waited patiently for their shot at a free bird.

Former NFL superstar cornerback Darrelle Revis did not disappoint.

Revis, who now lives in South Florida, said he had it rough growing up, so he understands the need.

"I grew up in an urban community, an urban setting, and there were struggles, I was a participant in the free lunch program," he recalled.

Revis said he made his money playing football and now is the time to give back.

Monday morning, he and his foundation distributed a thousand turkeys to families in need.

"It makes a very big difference, for instance, this is my first time cooking a turkey," said Octavia McNicholas.

Eugene Mooney said he has four mouths to feed this Thanksgiving.

"This community needs plenty of food, alot of people are suffering out there," he said.

The giveaway was part of Revis' foundation's mission to combat the childhood hunger crisis in America through giving back.

During his career, Revis played with the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs, and New England Patriots. It was with the Patriots in 2014 that he scored his Super Bowl ring with their win over the Seattle Seahawks.
