Students To Take Part In Mock Miami Outbreak

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) —  Students from around the country will be practicing how to manage an outbreak in Miami.

Fifty high school students will visit Florida International University's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine on Friday.

A school statement says the students will find themselves in the midst of a mock outbreak of a highly infectious disease.

The exercise simulates the process doctors go through to solve a medical mystery and reach a diagnosis.

Teams will gather clues to the outbreak by rotating through several stations where they will interview a patient, experience a simulated medical emergency, review autopsy results, go over x-rays and lab results.

They'll then present their findings and recommendations.

The students are participating in a national summer program.
