FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A momma duck can thank a group of Fort Lauderdale firefighters for saving her ducklings from a drain pipe.

In a unique animal rescue, members of Fort Lauderdale's Fire Rescue Haz Mat 88 was out training on Sunday, October 26th when a crewmember noticed an adult duck that appeared in distress and was walking around a drainpipe.

The crew discovered a 4-inch plumbing clean out drain with chirping noises coming out of it. The drain was about 4-feet deep and then it turned sharply into the building at a right angle.

The crew realized the conventional method of saving ducklings was not going to work so the crew brainstormed a better idea. They retrieved a "shop vacuum" from the Haz Mat truck and proceeded to feed the suction end of the vacuum into the 4-inch pipe.

One at a time, each duckling was sucked out of the drain to safety.
