Stubborn Termites Reemerge In Dania Beach

DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) – A stubborn pest has reemerged in a Dania Beach neighborhood that poses a real threat to homeowners.
The conehead termite, which was first identified in an area off I-95 and Griffin Road back in 2001 and then eradicated, was found again recently during a survey by Department of Agriculture workers.
Coneheads are voracious eaters which chew through wood at tremendous speeds.
"You will see them going up the sides of structures with foraging Tubes," said spokesman Mark Fagan.

Crews destroyed over 25 nests in a vacant lot off Griffin Road.
The state is trying to contain the termite in a one-square mile area and prevent it from spreading to other parts of Florida.
It's believed it was first brought here on a crate from the Caribbean.
Homeowner Joe Aderholdt said he's glad the state continues to survey property for signs of termites.
"You don't want it to get out of hand," he said.
