Several Fort Lauderdale high school students taken to hospital after ingesting edible marijuana, officials say
Several high school students in Fort Lauderdale were taken to a local hospital after officials say they ingested edible marijuana known as "gummies" on Wednesday, according to officials.
According to Broward County Public Schools, the incident happened at Stranahan High School, where several students were involved. The district said five were transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution, though Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue reported that only four students were taken for treatment.
Officials said the call came in just after 9 a.m., after the students told responders they had eaten the edibles and began to feel ill.
Students react to incident at school
"I just heard some kids took gummy drugs. I feel like that's very irresponsible. I'm at school. When you're on drugs at school, it's not good. You can act crazy," said student Brandon Jordan.
"I seen the ambulance through the window. Just say no to drugs," another student said.
Parents express concern about safety
Diane Kohler, who came to pick up her granddaughter, said, "That's disturbing. I wondered about that going around in school."
"It's not a good situation. Obviously, you never want your kids to be in a circumstance where they have to go to the hospital, especially something of that nature," said Steve Serrano, who was picking up his freshman son.
Family discussions about drugs at home
Serrano added that he regularly talks with his child about drugs.
"We do have family dissuasions about this often. I like to keep my child diligent in his surroundings, make sure he's prepared," he said.
Investigation underway by school district
The school district confirmed that an investigation is underway.
