TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) - The start of the new school year is just around the corner but dads may want to circle day next month in their calendars.

On September 30th, Florida is sponsoring it's first Dads Take Your Child to School Day. The idea is for fathers, or significant male role models in a child's life, to take them to school to learn about it and what their child is learning.

Additional research suggests that when fathers are actively involved in their child's education, the student performs better academically, has fewer discipline problems and has a better chance of becoming a responsible adult.

Other states have hosted similar one day events. New York held their first Dad Take Your Child to School Day in 2003. Last year, more than 11,000 men took part.
