State Suspends Some Standardized Testing For Younger Students

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Some of Florida's youngest students are getting a pass this year on a portion of state's standardized tests.

This year the state's education department is suspending the computer portion of the "Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR)" for students in kindergarten through second grade, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

Many school systems, including Miami-Dade, ran into technical troubles administering the tests.

The computer based tests are given three times annually, and are used to help teachers customize their lesson plans to meet their students' needs.

This year, the state made some changes to the testing technology — a move that caused widespread computer glitches.

The state made its decision to suspend the assessments based on those glitches and input from superintendents, education department spokesman Joe Follick told the Miami Herald.

Kindergarten teachers will still have to meet student screening requirements outlined in Florida law, Follick said. But for now, basic observations will suffice.
