State House Passes Bill To Protect Taxpayer Email Addresses

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - The Florida House has given final approval to a bill that would create a public-records exemption for taxpayer email addresses held by county tax collectors.
House members voted 117-0 to approve the bill, which supporters say can help prevent identity theft and scams.
Last month, the Senate unanimously passed the measure, which is ready to go to Gov. Rick Scott.
The public-records exemption would prevent the release of taxpayers' email addresses obtained by county tax collectors for the purpose of sending tax notices. The Tallahassee-based First Amendment Foundation, which advocates for open records and open government, has opposed the bill.
