MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Law enforcement officials said a knife reportedly found at O.J. Simpson's former estate isn't likely connected to the killings of his ex-wife and her friend, CBS News reports.

An official with knowledge of the investigation said Los Angeles Police told detectives they doubt the knife was used in the 1994 killings, according to the Associated Press.

They believe the knife is one that is common among gardeners and is too small to cause the wounds found on Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

As for the final results, they wont know for at least three weeks, according to Police Captain Andy Neiman who said they are looking for DNA and other material on the knife.

While the murder weapon used to kill Simpson and Goldman was never found, police warn that it may turn out to be another false lead.

A construction worker reportedly found the knife years ago and turned it in to an officer working in the traffic division at the time, the L.A.P.D said last week.

The officer reportedly took the knife and kept it for years until late January of this year when he turned it in to police.

Neiman said they do not know if the officer was retired at the time he received the knife but they do know he retired sometime in the late 90s.

Retired LAPD Detective Tom Lange who was the lead investigator in the case says Simpson's property was thoroughly searched.

"It's always a possibility that it was overlooked," Lange told CBS News, "but the time that we had and the time that Simpson had this knife, I would be very surprised if we would have missed something like this."

Back in 1995, O.J. Simpson was found not guilty in the murder case of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. This means he cannot be prosecuted again since it would be double jeopardy.

The reported discovery comes as a miniseries on the O.J. Case has caused renewed interest.
