POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) -- A sister's call to authorities has ended in the death of her brother at the hands of police officers in Pompano Beach.

It began as a domestic disturbance call just before 10 p.m. Friday, September 10th, at the home at 320 N.W. 14 Street.

Deborah Frazier said she dialed 911 after her daughter and 55-year-old brother, Gregory Frazier, got into an altercation.

"They had a little fight," Deborah said. "My brother was a little upset. And I was a little scared. So I called the police, you know, hoping that they would talk to my brother and constrain him. I didn't think that the altercation would cause death."

Deputies arrived and were directed to the back yard where they confronted Gregory, who was armed with a pocket knife, according to officials.

"He was armed with a knife," said Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. "A confrontation happened and both deputies fired shots. The subject, tragically, was pronounced deceased on the scene."

Following the shooting, family members, obviously upset, wondered why deadly force was deemed necessary.

"Yes, he had a pocket knife. A rusty pocket knife," Deborah recalled. "I believe those three cops could have sat down, talked to him, used tasers, anything, to constrain him."

Investigators spent most of the night into Saturday morning documenting the scene, canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and taking statements.

The deputies involved were placed on administrative leave.

Anyone who may have witnessed or heard the shooting is encouraged to contact Homicide Det. Ricky Libman at (954) 321-4210.
