MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) -- Sinkholes are causing traffic problems for drivers heading south on the turnpike.

Officials said a severely damaged water line break has forced a shutdown of a stretch of road Saturday afternoon, August 27th, near the 199th Street exit in the southbound lanes.

About an hour later, a second sinkhole opened up a few feet away from the first.

"No one was hurt. That is our mission, always to protect the motorists," said the Florida Highway Patrol's Joe Sanchez. "We closed off the road and this is where we're at right now, we're assessing the damage to the road. We know that there's a water main line that broke and caused this damage. We contacted all the authorities that are out here, trying to resolve this problem."

Drivers reported turning around on the highway and being detoured in the wrong direction in order to exit the highway.

This portion of the road will remain closed for the time being.
