Singer Injured In Haiti Float Accident Recovering In South Florida

BOYNTON BEACH (CBSMiami) — A Haitian musician injured in Haiti's Carnival parade is recovering in South Florida.

Daniel Darinus has burns covering his head, neck, and hand but he is thankful he is here to tell his story.

"I can't be upset. All this is natural. Everything that happens, that's what God wants. I can't fight with with God," he said through a translator.

The Haitian musician, better known as Fantom, was on top of a float during a Carnival parade in Haiti last week when he came in contact with a power line.

"I remember I was performing all the sudden the sparks," recalled Darinus.

He doesn't remember much after that.  In the chaos that followed 17 people died nearly 80 were injured- many trampled as the crowds ran.

Fantom spent four days in the hospital in Haiti and is now receiving treatment in South Florida.  He said the microphone on his chest caught fire causing burns to his chest.

Fantom is part of the Barikad Crew a popular Haitian band.  The musicians were on top of the float for the parade.

Now he says he won't let his injuries keep him from his music.

"I'm going to continue to work. That's what I know how to do is music. It's a mission God gave me and if I'm alive here today and I didn't die, it's because what I'm destined to sing I haven't sung yet. I'll continue to sing for the people," Darinus said through a translator.

Darinus plans to go back to Haiti for the release of his new album next month.
