PALM BEACH COUNTY (CBSMiami) -- University of Alabama at Birmingham's Greg Bryant is in critical condition after he was reportedly shot while driving on I-95.

The Palm Beach Post reported that Bryant, who starred as a running back for American Heritage High School's football team, was traveling with another man when authorities discovered them both inside the car suffering from gunshots around 4:45 a.m Saturday.

They were rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center with Bryant in critical condition, according to West Palm Beach Police.

Early reports said that Bryant had died, however, they were later shown to be inaccurate.

Bryant's passenger, Maurice Glover, was listed with "minor injuries."

"The UAB Football Family's prayers are with Greg Bryant and his family this morning," said UAB coach Bill Clark in a statement to AL.com. "He was injured in a shooting last night in Miami and is receiving medical care, surrounded by his family. We are working to get more information and to support Greg and his family in this difficult time."

Bryant transferred to UAB this past November after beginning his career at Notre Dame.
