Sheriff's Detention Deputy Struck, Killed Pedestrian

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – A man is dead after a Broward Sheriff's Office detention deputy, on his way back to work after break, struck him with his personal car.
According to BSO, Detention Deputy Timothy Rolle, hired in 2007, was on his way back to work at the North Broward Bureau detention facility in his personal car.
At approximately 3:52 AM, Rolle was traveling north on NW 31 Ave. when his car, a black 2014 Infinity, struck 60-year-old Jerome Byrd near 1201 NW 31 Ave.
Police say it is unclear why Byrd was in the road. He was not in a crosswalk or intersection at the time of the accident.
Byrd was pronounced dead on the scene by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.
A woman who said she's Byrd's wife says they've been together 41 years. She's not sure what he was doing in the area.
"Yes I'm highly upset. I was told he got killed by a car," she told CBS4's Joan Murray.
Detention Deputy Rolle remained on the scene. He was not injured in the crash. As a matter of routine, Rolle is on paid leave for three days.
Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
