FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A Broward Sheriff's deputy has been suspended in light of sex charges involving a minor.

Leon Campbell, 37, turned himself in Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest following a 5-month investigation, according to Lauderhill Police.

Campbell was charged with Lewd and Lascivious Battery and Unlawful Sexual Activity with a Minor. He bonded out of the Broward County jail Friday afternoon and wasn't speaking about the accusations.

According to an arrest report, in May, a 17-year-old girl told her grandmother she'd been having a sexual relationship with Campbell for two years.

When confronted about it, Campbell admitted to sleeping with the teen and apologized, court records show.

The teen's family members reported the allegations to law enforcement in Lauderhill, the city where Campbell lives, and they retrieved several items from his home after a search warrant was issued.

Some of the items collected included a whip and vibrator.

A cell phone taken by investigators showed, according to court records, that "Over the last thirty days, the teen and Leon Campbell had spoken 164 times and several of the conversations were in the middle of the night or when the teen was supposed to be in school."

Sheriff Scott Israel issued a statement saying the officer's actions were not a reflection of the hard-working, dedicated men and women of the Broward sheriff's office.

BSO hired Campbell in 2008. He was suspended without pay.
