Seven Mile Bridge To Close Saturday Morning For Annual Race

MARATHON (CBSMiami/FKNB) - The Seven Mile Bridge, longest of 42 bridges over water that help comprise the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, is scheduled to close to traffic Saturday from 6:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The temporary closure is to be facilitated to stage the annual Seven Mile Bridge Run.

The race, featuring a field of 1,500 runners, is to begin at 7:30 a.m.

The contest began in 1982 to celebrate the completion of a federally funded program that built a new Seven Mile Bridge and 36 other Keys spans. The contest was so well received local officials decided to continue it.

This year's race sold out within 10 minutes after online registration opened.

The Florida Keys News Bureau contributed to this report.
