Senator Rubio Meets With South Korean Human Rights Advocates

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA (CBSMiami) -- U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), met with human rights advocates Saturday while on an official visit to South Korea.

Rubio met with other human rights activists and non-governmental organizations based in South Korea to discuss ways to raise international awareness about the repressive regime in North Korea.

"Being raised in and representing a community of Cuban exiles, I have friends, constituents and visitors to my office who know what oppression is because of their experiences as political prisoners in Castro's gulags," said Rubio. "Hearing firsthand accounts of the human rights violations that occur in North Korea affected me on a personal level.

On Friday, Rubio met with the South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byun-se in Seoul.

Rubio's three-day visit is meant to boost bilateral ties between the two countries.

Rubio arrived in the capital on Thursday making it his final stop on his week-long trip to Asia.

The Republican Senator is expected to discuss regional and global issues with Yun.

On Thursday, Rubio visited the Demilitarized Zone which is the heavily armed border between the two Koreas. He also met U.S. troops there.

Rubio is set to leave South Korea on Saturday.
