TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - After rejecting a series of Democratic amendments, the Republican-dominated Senate prepared Thursday to give final approval to a bill that would require women to wait 24 hours before having abortions.

The Senate took up a bill (HB 633) that passed the House on Wednesday.

The measure, which would require a 24-hour waiting period for abortions, has drawn heavy debate. The Senate rejected eight Democratic amendments Thursday.

As an example, it turned down an amendment, proposed by Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, that would have allowed women to waive the 24-hour waiting period if they live 100 miles of more from the nearest abortion providers.

Senators could vote on the overall bill as soon as Friday.
