TALLASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) – Right now you can't be pulled over solely for texting while driving in Florida. But a Brevard County senator has filed a proposal Wednesday that would strengthen the law surrounding the controversial multitasking issue.

The bill filed by Sen. Thad Altman, would allow enforcement of the ban as what is known as a "primary" offense. That would mean police officers could stop motorists for texting while behind the wheel.

Under current law, texting while driving is considered a "secondary" offense, which only allows drivers to be cited if they are stopped by police for other reasons.

Rep. Richard Stark also has filed has a similar bill to be considered during the 2015 legislative session.
