MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Florida Senator Bill Nelson appeared for his first vote since he underwent surgery to remove cancer.

The vote on Wednesday evening was for a long-term transportation bill.

According to his staff, the bill was important to him and he wanted to be there to ensure there would be enough votes for the full Senate to take it up.

Nelson and 61 other senators voted "yes" to the bill.

"The bill still needs some fixing but tonight it was a question of whether or not we even have a bill to fix," said Nelson. "If we don't have a long-term highway funding bill, we won't have the money we need to repair and build roads and bridges."

His first appearance comes days after Nelson's office announced he was cancer free following a prostate surgery last week.
