MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The African American vote is expected to play a big role in the governor's race.

While, historically, voter turnout specifically at midterm elections has been low in the African American community, political leaders like State Senator Dwight Bullard said things seem to be turning around a bit.

"Across the State of Florida, especially in areas with significant black population, we have seen a tremendous uptick - 125% over performance in Miami-Dade County and its African American voter-based," said Senator Bullard with District 39.

Senator Bullard credits the 'Souls to the Polls' movement for some of that increase.

"With souls to the polls, specifically, we saw engagement from pastors who said enough is enough.  Tired of congregants talking about the inability to find jobs," said Bullard.

The movement was in full effect Sunday, focusing on motivating African Americans to head to the polls and even helping them get there by bus right after attending their Sunday morning church service.

In addition to being motivated by the crowd and their pastors, black voters CBS4's Summer Knowles spoke with said ultimately they were most motivated by the issues.

"They should raise the minimum wage because it's very hard out here, especially for single women as parents," said voter Kendra McMinns.

"The economy, I believe," said Gladys Nesbit. "Yes, for it to be better. Hopefully, better."

Emma Bryant added, "health care, crime and help the seniors. The seniors need help, most importantly we need help.
