TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - Prostate surgery conducted Monday on U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., was a "complete success."

"Bill wants to thank all the people in Florida and elsewhere who sent prayers and well wishes," Nelson's wife, Grace, said in a release from the senator's office. "The doctors, nurses and staff caring for him are all just great."

Nelson, the only Democratic statewide elected official in Florida, had announced Thursday that he was having surgery for prostate cancer. His office said the cancer was detected in an early stage.

In the initial announcement, Nelson, 72, added that the diagnosis would not affect his plans to run for a fourth term in 2018.

The News Service of Florida contributed to this report.
