MIAMI (CBSMiami) --  A shooting outside the White House gates prompted a lockdown Friday afternoon.

The lockdown was lifted just after 4 p.m. That's about 30 minutes after it was enacted. Around that time, armed Secret Service could be seen positioned on the White House roof, according to CBS News Correspondent Mark Knoller.

Sources told CBS News, the man walked up to a White House checkpoint, raised a gun and pointed it at a Secret Service officer prompting the officer to fire at him.  The alleged gunman is listed in critical condition.

A gun has been recovered from the scene.

Sources said President Barack Obama was not on the property at the time. However, Vice President Joe Biden was on the property at the time and was moved to a safe place.

A social media user at Lafayette Park near the White House posted video of people being evacuated around 3:39 p.m.
