Section Of Merrie Christmas Park Reopens

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A portion of Merrie Christmas Park has reopened after weeks of being closed due to concerns of possible soil contamination.

Friday, City of Miami Parks and Recreation opened the eastern portion of Merrie Christmas Park at South Lejeune Road and Barbarrosa Avenue.

Miami-Dade County's Department of Environmental Resource Management recently discovered small patches of toxins after routine testing for ash in locations surrounding the Old Smoky Incinerator.

However, the city received clearance that testing concluded there was no evidence of contamination in the eastern portion of the park.

A fence was relocated to outline the smaller area that is now accessible.

The western half of the park is expected to reopen sometime in June.
