Scott Pitches New Job Training Program

JACKSONVILLE (CBSMiami/AP) — As the 2014 election cycle kicks into gear, Governor Rick Scott is now calling for more spending, specifically $30 million a year on a new job training program.

Scott announced the initiative during a stop at a convenience food manufacturer. The programs will be focused on fields in science, technology, engineering and math and high-demand areas.

Scott said that part of the money would go for scholarships to students who would train in high-demands fields at either a state college or vocational school.

The scholarship amount and eligibility criteria have not been determined yet.

Another portion of the money would be set aside to businesses. Florida already provides $12 million in training grants to businesses.

The Scott administration did not provide many details about the new programs. It would need to be authorized by state legislators this spring.
