Sand, Sandbags Given Out In Prep For Erika

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The National Hurricane Center has forecast that Tropical Storm Erika will be just that when it reaches South Florida.

While it may not have the roof damaging, tree uprooting winds of a hurricane, it will have rain. Lots of of it which may flood low lying areas.

To help residents prevent water damage in their homes, several cities are giving away sandbags which can help keep flood water at bay.

In Doral, they will be available to residents Friday until 3:30 p.m. at Doral Central Park at 3000 NW 87 Avenue. Each vehicle is limited to 10 bags. ID will be required of Doral residency or business.

Hollywood's Department of Public Works will have more than 2,400 sandbags to pass out to city residents.

Each household is allowed a maximum of 10 sandbags. Proof of residency is required.

The distribution will be from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the Public Works Administration Complex at 1600 South Park Road.

The City of Hallandale Beach is also handing out free sandbags to its residents. They can be be picked up from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Public Works Compound at 630 NW 2nd Street.

Hallandale Beach residents must provide proof of residence to obtain the bags. The city will provide up to 10 sandbags per property address. City staff will be available to assist residents in loading sandbags into vehicles. To streamline the distribution process, residents will be directed to drive into the Public Works compound along a circular route to pick up sandbags and exit without having to reverse direction.

Concrete Ready Mix is giving away 50-thousand pounds of sand to people who may need it. The company is located at 7301 NW 47th Street in Miami. The sand will be available until it runs out.
