Samsung Replacements Arrive At Stores Amid Battery Recall

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Samsung will have 500 thousand replacement Galaxy Note 7 phones in stores Wednesday.

That's enough to replace about half of the devices recalled for battery issues.

Last week, U.S. safety regulations announced a formal recall of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 after a number of fires led to injuries and damages. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said the lithium-ion batteries in the phones could overheat and burst, and "the results can be serious."

Samsung had already started a voluntary recall and stopped selling the phone but the CPSC stepped in to coordinate saying it was not enough.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also issued a warning asking travelers not to use or pack their Galaxy Note 7.

So far, about 25 percent of Note 7 owners in the U.S. have exchanged their devices.

The company will have replacements for the rest of the phones by the end of the month.
